Nomads, Silver allege Sulom favouring ‘a certain’ team

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and Silver Strikers have accused Super League of Malawi (Sulom) of working to frustrate them to advance the interests of “a certain team”.

The two teams said this yesterday following the league-runners’ decisions to launch match-fixing investigations against them and also turn down their request to postpone their match scheduled for this afternoon.

However, the two teams could not be drawn to mention the club in question.

In a statement issued yesterday, Nomads’ board secretary Chancy Gondwe said: “We are now fed up with all this. The problem we have at Sulom is that they have their favoured team.

“They want their team to win the league. The whole competition is already rigged in favour of their team.”

Gondwe: We are fed up

Gondwe, a private practice lawyer, also alleged that there are some officials at Sulom involved in match-fixing.

He said: “If they [Sulom] want to investigate match-fixing, they need not to go far. The malpractice is there in Sulom. They collude with their preferred team and always make decisions in favour of one team.

“Why should teams be participating in a rigged league? Let FAM [Football Association of Malawi] intervene in all this and allow proper investigations into match-fixing scandals that have been happening for some time.

“We have judges who can preside over such matters and make proper recommendations for the sake of the game.”

On his part, Silver Strikers company secretary Peter Masiye said Sulom needs to take a firm line “and not serve the interests of one team”.

He said: “We are aware of what is happening behind the scenes and this selective justice will kill our game. Let teams win through fair competition and not because they are being aided.

“Their allegations of match-fixing are shocking. Actually, this was not the first time for us to make a joint request, we did it before with [FCB Nyasa] Bullets.

“Sulom are just targeting us, they want to find a loophole to punish us and that is not fair.”

But reacting to the accusations in an interview yesterday, Sulom general secretary Williams Banda said: “We will comment at an appropriate time. All teams are treated fairly and equally.”
